what to wear | for the new mama.

March 6, 2017

So far, this has been quite the year for babies, and looking ahead to March, that streak only continues! Probably one of the number one questions I get leading up to a newborn session is: What should we wear? New mama, with your freshly emptied belly and tired eyes, I hear you! Nothing in the closet fits. Maternity clothes are the last thing you want to keep wearing. And there’s a photographer coming over to capture you in this fragile, in between state.

I’m here to help! I’ve put together a few ideas based on some of my favorite sessions to get you started. And the best thing is that you might actually be able to get some use out of these even after your body returns to a somewhat normal state.

01/ SWING DRESS. Honestly, this is probably my favorite option. It is delicate, comfortable and relaxed. I love photographing new babies with mamas in light clothing and pretty details. Here are a couple dresses that fit that bill.

02/ KIMONO over a simple top/leggings. When deciding what to wear for a session, I always recommend something that is “you.” Maybe you’re not a dress kind of gal, and that’s fine. A colorful kimono over a plain tank/leggings is great, and adds some fun color to your session.

03/ LOOSE TOP.  Essentially the idea of a swing dress, but in shirt form. This is a great option for the winter months, when going bare legged isn’t very appealing.

04/ KNIT MAXI DRESS. Comfort is key. The relaxed, form forgiving maxi dress is always a good option. Simple and classic.

DON’T //
+ Wear tight or fitted clothing that may cause you to feel self-conscious, or hindered from sitting or moving around.
+ Accessorize with necklaces. They’ll only get in the way when you’re snuggling your baby.
+ Wear red, fuchsia or any other intense color that might color cast on your baby’s skin.

DO //
+ Get your nails done. This is a pre-delivery appointment, that I definitely recommend scheduling!
+ Make time the morning of our session to get a shower, do your make-up and blow dry your hair. You’ll feel like a new woman.
+ Choose light colored clothing. Patterns are fine, details such as embroidery, smocking or cut-outs are a plus.
+ Relax and enjoy snuggling this amazing little person you made.

Years from now, the tired eyes and wardrobe woes will be forgotten, and you’ll be so glad you documented these early days. I want you to remember those smitten moments, coming on the heels of one of the most amazing life experiences you can walk through. I want you to see how you glowed, how your eyes filled with love you didn’t know possible, and be taken back to when your baby fit so perfectly in your arms. You are all heroes, new mamas. All my love <3
