what to wear 2018.

October 10, 2018

Holiday sessions commence on Saturday morning, and currently the forecast is calling for a deliciously crisp sunny autumn day. One of my favorite aspects of helping clients prepare is my annual assembly of the what to wear guide. This year, I went a new route and just did a few sets of pinterest boards to inspire. I sent them out in my newsletter along with some tips I encourage clients to keep in mind as they are planning the ever daunting wardrobe…

+ COLOR // Start with a base color palette based on a piece you know you want to include : black and white, red and green, fall tones, blues. This is your foundation. Add neutrals (white, gray, khaki, etc) : this will often be found in staple pieces : pants, tights, tee under a sweater or romper, etc… Then add an accent color. This might be a sweater, jacket, or even shoes! The goal is to create a pleasing visual aesthetic.

+ PATTERN // I am a big fan of at least one person in a pattern — this could be a plaid shirt, a flowered skirt, or checked dress. It creates visual interest in your pictures. Too many patterns can be busy, but working within your color palette you can add at least one or two…

+ VARIETY // Once you have an idea of your colors and patterns, start filling out your wardrobe with the basics : pants, tights, jackets, tees etc… this is where you can add some additional variety. In general, try to have variation in everyone’s tops at minimum – in color, texture or pattern. If mom and daughter are both in light colors, add a cardigan or jacket to break up the similar tones. If dad is in khakis, put your little boy in jeans or corduroy pants. And don’t forget shoes : boots, sneakers, heels. Change it up, make it interesting. Add variety!
