“Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell About it.” — Mary Oliver
It’s been quite a while since I’ve been blogged, but there’s been plenty going on behind the scenes over here… New print material, business cards, a revised pricebook magazine, and of course, this new blog/site. My hope (fingers crossed!) is that I can get on a consistent blog schedule (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and actually start sharing some of the amazing families I’ve worked with recently!
In addition to refreshing this site, I’ve been doing a bit of refreshing in my head and heart as well. Last month, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop in Oregon taught by the amazing artist who photographed our wedding in 2013. It was the first time I’ve ever set aside a whole weekend to simply focus on cultivating the creative…and I loved it. I came away from my trip motivated to stretch boundaries artistically, add more visual layers to my work, and create more mental space to pay attention and be astonished. We took time at the workshop to think through our unique journey and goals as a photographer. Themes emerged through our stories, and we came away with a plan for representing those themes visually. There were some different areas I’d been mulling over in the weeks leading up to this getaway, and I loved seeing how those translated perfectly into my creative goals for this year. Going forward, I feel an increased clarity on the direction of my work : capturing warmth, connection and the joy of loving and being loved. To be trusted to “tell about it” through the medium of photography is such a gift.
