Last month, my wedding photographer posted on instagram about a last minute opening for a one day workshop she was doing in D.C. Yan Palmer is one of my all-time photography favs, and I jumped at the chance of learning from her, for even a few hours. After a morning newborn shoot, I met up with her and a small group of local photographers for lunch and to talk shop. From there we headed to photograph some friends of mine who had agreed to model for us. Heading into this experience, I didn’t know what to expect. I felt pretty comfortable with where I was as a photographer and the direction of my images. I love simple, clean images and good light. I have a passion to capture genuine connections. I want the love that parents have for their little people to radiate from my work. I want the details and perfection of each child to be caught and remembered. I still want all those things. But getting to spend the afternoon with Yan gave me renewed passion for what I do as an artist. Just spending a few hours with her… pushed me to think more creatively and inspired me to capture more of the details surrounding a family. She encouraged being ok with imperfect and messy and the beauty therein. And she’s just a super fun person to hang out with. That afternoon in April gave me a fresh vision and love for what I get to do every week. The session we captured embodies so much of what I strive for. Thank you dear Yan for reminding me again why I love photography so much. I am so grateful.
